A Study of the Correlation Between Locus of Control, Self-Esteem and Mental Health Status


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate mental health status of nurse, to analysis relationship between locus of control, self-esteem and mental health status, to provide baseline data for the improvement of nurse¢¥s adaptative mental health.
The subjects of the study 122 nurses working in general hospital in Kunsan.
Data collection was been from January 15 to January 30, 1992, by means of questionnaire.
The instruments used for this study wallstion and colleagues¢¥ Health Locus of Control Scale, Rosenberg¢¥s Self-Esteem Scale and Lee¢¥s Mental Health Status Scale.
Analysis of data was done of descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The result of this study may be summarized as follows:
1. Test of hypothesis.
1) Hypothesis 1: "The higher the level of external locus of control, the lower the level of self-esteem" was rejected (r= -.1426 p > .05).
2) Hypothesis 2: "The higher the level of external locus of control, the higher the level of depression" was accepted (r= -.2099 p < .05).
3) Hypothesis 3: "The higher the level of self-esteem, the lower the level of depression of mental health status" was accepted (r= -.4267 p < .05).
4) Hypothesis 4: "The higher the level of self-esteem,-the lower the level of anxiety of mental health status was accepted (r= -.4276 p < .05).
2. The mean of Locus of control in personality was 30.6967 in a possible range of
11 to 55.
The mean of self-esteem was 28.6066 in a possible range 10 to 40.
The mean of mental health status was 35.8000 in possible range of 0 to 184. The severity of the subscales range down in the following order: interpersonal sensitivity, obses-
sion, somatization, depression, anxiety, hostility, psychosis, phobic anxiety and paranoid ideation.
3. The relationship between general characteristics and various variables.
Factors influencing of locus of control in personality was educational level (F=4.9697 p <.001).
Factors influencing of self-esteem were educational level (F= 3.1443 p <.05) and economic level (T= 2.7831 p <.05).
Factors influencing of mental health status were educational level (F= .2839 p < .05) and economic level (T= 2.4637 p <.05).
